Had a conversation with someone on my team this week about being impulsive. It’s been sitting with me since.

Looked back at most of the mistakes I’ve made in business and personally. Almost none came from not knowing enough. They came from not stopping long enough to ask what I actually wanted before I moved.

I’d act first. Build the reasoning after. For years I called that decisiveness. Founders are supposed to move fast, right?

Lately I see it differently. A lot of what I called “moving fast” was avoiding the discomfort of sitting with a hard choice.

@naval has this idea: spend 10-25% of a task’s time just deciding if it’s worth doing at all. Planning a 4 year degree? Spend 6-12 months first asking if that’s really what you want.

What got me is how obvious that sounds and how rarely I actually did it.

Not writing this because I’ve fixed it. I haven’t. Caught myself doing the old thing twice this week.

Just trying to build the habit now. Pause before I commit. Get clear on what I actually want before I pour the hours in.

Small shift. Doesn’t feel natural yet.

Didn’t want to keep making the same mistake for another eight years without naming it.

Still working on it.
